Big Country patients have more options than ever to treat and relieve symptoms from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate. More than 40 million men across the nation suffer with bothersome urinary symptoms associated with enlarged prostate, including frequent and urgent urination, weak urine flow and interrupted sleep from multiple trips to the bathroom. Dr. Katherine Rinard, urologist at Hendrick Medical Center, will present an informative talk that will focus on the range of BPH treatments available for men, Thursday, Jan. 24 at 6 p.m. in Hendrick Medical Center’s Tom Roberts Conference Center, located on the second floor.

Along with traditional therapies of medication or surgery, Rinard will discuss a new treatment option now being used at Hendrick. Cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the UroLift® System is the first permanent implant to treat symptoms due to urinary outflow obstruction secondary to BPH in men 50 years of age or older. Rinard is the only urologist in the area currently performing this procedure.

“We are committed to providing patients with the highest quality, most effective options to address their urological needs,” said Rinard. “The UroLift System has an excellent safety profile and provides men suffering from an enlarged prostate an additional first-line treatment alternative to drug therapy or more invasive surgery. This system provides fast and meaningful relief from symptoms, improving overall quality of life for our patients.”

The procedure does not require any cutting, heating or removal of prostate tissue. Urologists use the UroLift device to lift and move the enlarged prostate tissue out of the way so it no longer blocks the urethra (the passageway that urine flows through). Patients recover from the procedure quickly, and return to their normal routines with minimal downtime.
