Special Services:
P.E.T.S. (Pet Enhanced Therapy Services)
The P.E.T.S. program is volunteer based utilizing animal/owner teams in therapy, visitation and community outreach.
A therapy dog is a privately owned dog that has received extensive obedience training, a complete veterinary checkup, has passed the temperament evaluation and training sessions within the hospital.
These dogs understand the purpose for their visit and are so reliably trained they can be utilized in the patient's therapy and enhance the patient's performance. They are capable of working with individuals who have a variety of disabilities and can adjust their behavior to each patient accordingly.
At Hendrick Center for Rehabilitation we provide P.E.T.S. on a full time basis for the inpatient unit, outpatient unit and acute rehabilitation unit. The therapy animals work with all ages of patients and include Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists and Speech Language Pathologists.
At Hendrick Medical Center a visitation program also is provided. We visit two skilled nursing facilities, an extended care unit, a long term care facility, Meek Children's Hospital, oncology unit and a Hospice unit.
In visitation, we work to help the patient ease anxiety, loss of not seeing a family pet, self esteem, depression and offer a warm hug from a willing animal. In visitation we reach family, visitors and staff members who smile when interacting with our therapy animals.
The P.E.T.S. program travels into the community providing numerous health fairs. We provide safety demonstrations, responsible animal ownership, career choices and demonstrate the impact the animal-human bond can have in the rehabilitation process.

H.E.R.O. (Hendrick Equine Rehabilitation Opportunities)
Hendrick Equine Rehabilitation Opportunities - the HERO program - is one of Hendrick Center for Rehabilitation's premier services.
Why a horse?
Hippotherapy, the therapeutic discipline that encompasses the HERO program, is derived from the Greek word "hippos", and literally means "treatment with the help of the horse".
The horse's walk provides sensory input through movement which is variable, rhythmic and repetitive. This form of treatment is effective because the movements of the horse's pelvis are similar to the patient's. It is the quiet, swinging rhythm of the horse's back that exerts the positive influence on the patient. These movements improve strength, coordination, motor skills and stimulate the respiratory system and neurological activity.
The HERO program can positively improve balance, posture, mobility and function. It also can affect psychological, cognitive, behavioral and communication functions for patients of all ages.
How does the H.E.R.O. program work?
A typical therapy session in the HERO program lasts 20-40 minutes.
The HERO program offers a fun, effective alternative form of therapy to patients needing treatments in addition to traditional therapeutic methods and modalities.
What type of patients are appropriate?
Patients who may benefit from the HERO program can have many varying diagnoses, including: muscular dystrophy, Down syndrome, arthritis, spina bifida, polio, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, stroke, traumatic brain injury, developmental delay, autism and learning or language disabilities. However, the HERO program is not for every patient. Each patient must be evaluated on an individual basis by specially-trained healthcare professionals and must be referred to the program by a physician.
