Treatment
Following diagnostic testing, your physician will determine appropriate follow-up. If deemed appropriate by the referring physician, you may enter the rehabilitation phase of the program. A physical therapist will perform an evaluation to assess the following: balance, level of dizziness, safety awareness, positional symptoms, ability to walk, vestibular ocular reflex (VOR), strength and ROM. The physical therapist will develop a plan of care that includes a specific program to meet your needs. This may include a frequency and duration of physical therapy sessions one to three times a week for two to six weeks. EAch session may last 30 - 60 minutes.
- Balance therapy - refers to a treatment regiment that concentrates on improving endurance, coordination, strength and overall balance ability. It may include cardiovascular and strengthening exercises, postural exercises, balance exercises and education.
- Vestibular rehabilitation therapy - involved individualized, symptom-specific exercises to decrease dizziness and improve balance and function. It involved head and eye movement/exercises and possibly positional exercises.
