Cardiac Rehabilitation

Hendrick Cardiac Rehabilitation program begins in the hospital following your cardiac intervention (angioplasty/stent) or surgery (coronary artery bypass or valve replacement/repair) and can be continued as an outpatient in the Cardiac Rehab units located on our campuses.

Cardiac rehabilitation assists patients with modifying their individual risk factors for heart disease, including nutrition, exercise, stress, smoking, hypertension, cholesterol, relationships, weight and medications, as they go through the recovery process. The optimal goal is to help patients develop and maintain a heart-healthy lifestyle, which often enhances their quality of life.

What’s Involved

A physician referral is required for Cardiac Rehab. An initial interview and orientation appointment is scheduled. Admission papers are signed, and an orientation tour of the exercise area is conducted. During this initial visit, the patient has the opportunity to discuss issues regarding current health status and personal risk factors for heart disease. Through collaboration with the patient, the RN or qualified Exercise Specialist develops a care plan and sets goals consistent with improving the patient’s overall cardiovascular fitness. The comprehensive Cardiac Rehab program is based on the three Es: Exercise, Education and Emotional Support.

Gettin’ in the Groove

Patients are recommended to attend three days a week: Monday, Wednesday and Friday. A typical exercise session requires approximately one hour in the department. The patient will wear a heart monitor and have frequent blood pressure checks. Professional staff provide close assistance, and activity levels are individualized according to the patient’s diagnosis and physical ability. RNs, Exercise Specialists and a Specialty Tech assist the patient. The staff offers more than 75 years of combined cardiac rehab and other cardiac related experience. A qualified physician is present in Cardiac Rehab during the monitored sessions. Program length is three days a week for 36 weeks. An alternative “Fast Track” program is available dependent upon the patient’s diagnosis and ability to advance more rapidly. An aggressive program is available for patients whose fitness level is better than average.

Afterward, Keepin' In The Groove

Cardiac Rehab can get you there and keep you there. Following graduation from the Cardiac Rehab monitored program is a " maintenance" program. You're a little more on your own, no heart monitor is used, but you're not alone. The same staff is there to support the patient, helping you become independent in taking your own blood pressure, counting your heart rate and keeping a record to show your physician. Maintenance hours are set aside when the nursing staff is available, and there are no monitored patients. An RN and additional staff are present during maintenance to assist patients as needed.
