Hendrick offers back-to-school health checklist for parents

Preparing a child to go back to school can sometimes feel overwhelming for parents. To help alleviate some of the stress, Hendrick Health offers a back-to-school health checklist of wellness recommendations to ensure a healthy, rested and bright start for students of all ages.

Checkups and Exams

  • Well visit with healthcare provider: immunization, wellness exam and screenings
  • Sports physical
  • Eye exam, as needed
  • Dental cleaning and checkup

An annual checkup with a healthcare provider is important for general wellness, school-mandatory immunizations and age-appropriate screenings. This appointment also gives parents an opportunity to ask questions and to express any concerns regarding their child’s health or development. Don’t forget about the sport’s physical and to request anything else needed by the school.

Depending on the age of the child, a vision exam might be done during the annual wellness checkup. If your child sees an optometrist already or is in need of one, make an appointment before the school year starts or as soon as possible. This allows your child time to adjust to any new eyewear or new prescription.

Dental appointments and following the dentist’s recommended regimen help prevent plaque buildup and cavities, as well as allow a dentist to take a look at next steps for your child’s adult teeth.

Wellness and Routine Recommendations

  • Begin an earlier sleep routine now
  • Plan balanced school lunch ideas
  • Select an appropriate-sized backpack
  • Practice mask wearing, if school requires

Early sleep schedule changes should take place before the school year starts as it allows your child to adjust to waking up earlier while still getting enough sleep. Plan balanced lunch ideas with your child. Healthy meals will keep your child energized throughout the day.

Get a head start on reviewing mask safety and sanitization. If masks are required or advised, practicing now will help your child be ready for the quick adjustment.

Backpack weight is oftentimes overlooked and can lead to back pain. To find the right backpack size and appropriate weight, read Watch That Backpack Load.
