Hendrick Health continues to provide the latest advanced medical procedures for stroke patients, and has added another treatment to offer quick and efficient removal of blood clots in the brain to restore blood flow to patients following acute ischemic strokes.
With Penumbra’s mechanical thrombectomy system, physicians now are able to reach the blood clot faster and remove the clot within minutes, ultimately improving patient outcomes.
An ischemic stroke occurs when a vessel supplying blood to the brain is obstructed. This type of stroke accounts for approximately 87% of all strokes.
The thrombectomy involves inserting a thin, tube-like device called a catheter into a leg artery. The catheter is precisely threaded through the body up to the blocked vessel in the brain. Via the catheter, the clot is vacuumed with suction or removed with a stent retriever.
Stroke is the leading cause of serious, long-term disability and the fifth leading cause of death in the United States. Hendrick Health is committed to following up-to-date, research-based guidelines for the treatment of stroke.
Hendrick Health hospitals in Abilene have received multiple American Heart Association Get With The Guidelines and Mission: Lifeline achievement awards for demonstrating commitment to following up-to-date, research-based guidelines for the treatment of stroke.
