Hendrick Clinic helps allergy sufferers through testing and immunotherapy treatments

West Texans are no strangers to allergies. But for some individuals, the symptoms can impede quality of life. To offer the best treatment options, physicians and patients must first know the cause.

“Allergy testing is normally recommended for patients whose allergy symptoms are not well controlled with regular allergy medications,” said Taylor Tidmore, MD, an otorhinolaryngologist with Hendrick Clinic Ear, Nose and Throat. “Testing can also be beneficial for patients whose allergies lead to other problems, such as recurrent sinus infections or exacerbation of asthma.”

Patients are tested for many area-specific environmental allergens, such as molds, trees, weeds and grass. Also included are more universal allergens, like dust mites, animal dander and certain foods.

During the test, allergens are inserted under the skin on the patient’s back by a stamp-like device. Any reactions typically occur within 20 minutes. Depending on the severity of the reaction, immunotherapy may be a viable treatment option for the patient.

“Immunotherapy is a process designed to desensitize the immune system,” said Dr. Tidmore. “We start off giving patients tiny doses of the things they are allergic to, so their body can build up an immunity to these allergens.”

Immunotherapy is administered by injection in the upper arm using a small needle, initially on a weekly basis. Over time, and as tolerated, the dose is increased until the patient reaches a maintenance dose. Many patients are able to stop treatment after three to five years.
Though it is a long-term commitment, Dr. Tidmore said immunotherapy can be the best way to control severe allergy symptoms for individuals.

Hendrick Clinic Ear, Nose and Throat offers allergy testing and immunotherapy for patients age 5 and older. Patients can discuss testing and treatment options with their primary care provider or contact Hendrick Clinic Ear, Nose and Throat at 325-437-3687.
