A new minimally-invasive procedure to treat benign prostate hyperplasia, also known as enlarged prostate, is now available at Hendrick Health.
In July, urologist Thomas Nelius, MD, with Hendrick Clinic Urology, and the Hendrick Health urology team performed its first robotic-assisted HYDROS™ Aquablation® to treat benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) with lower urinary track symptoms.
HYDROS Aquablation uses a heat-free waterjet to quickly and precisely remove excess obstructive prostate tissue without damaging vital anatomy controlling sexual and urinary function. The new procedure is designed to improve treatment efficiency and deliver a more accurate and consistent treatment plan for better clinical outcomes.
The enlargement of the prostate gland can cause men to have noticeable, disruptive urinary tract issues. Common indicators of BPH are the need to urinate immediately or urgently, urinating more often than normal and urinating frequently at night. Without timely treatment, BPH can lead to severe health issues such as permanent bladder or kidney damage, bladder stones and incontinence.
When medications are no longer effective for BPH symptoms, surgery can be an appropriate long-term solution for eligible patients. Compared to traditional surgical treatments for BPH, studies have shown HYDROS Aquablation offers fewer side effects.
Urologist Katherine Rinard, MD, also with Hendrick Clinic Urology, offers the procedure as well. Daniel Altstatt, MD, with Hendrick Clinic Urology, is expected to begin offering HYDROS Aquablation soon at Hendrick Medical Center Brownwood.
