Hendrick offers early detection and treatment in fight against lung cancer

According to the CDC, lung cancer is the leading form of cancer in the United States for both men and women. Fortunately, with early detection tools and improved treatments that number is decreasing. Hendrick Health offers teams of experts who are well equipped with advanced diagnostic tools, treatments and support to help individuals through all phases of cancer.

While there are multiple causes that contribute to the growth of lung cancer cells, cigarette smoking is the number one risk factor. Cigarette smoking is linked to approximately 80% to 90% of lung cancer deaths, and individuals who use cigarettes are 15 to 30 times more likely to get this type of cancer. Other tobacco products and secondhand smoke can increase the risk of lung cancer as well.

Depending on the type of cancer, treatments might include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy or a combination of these options.

Lung cancer can look and feel differently for each patient. Most individuals do not have symptoms until the cancer has advanced and some symptoms might look like other illnesses.

Symptoms can include:

  • Coughing
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • Coughing up blood
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue

Other risk factors for lung cancer can include:

  • Exposure to other substances like asbestos, arsenic and diesel exhaust
  • Family history of lung cancer
  • Cancer survivors who have had radiation therapy to the chest area
  • Diet

Individuals experiencing symptoms or who are at risk should speak to their healthcare provider. To find out eligibility for lung cancer screenings offered at Hendrick Health, visit hendrick.health/lungscreening or call 325-670-6358.
