Acute Rehabilitation

Acute rehabilitation services provides physical, occupational and speech therapy throughout the hospital, including the Emergency Department, Critical Care Unit, Progressive Care Unit, Hendrick Children’s Hospital and the Skilled Nursing Unit.

Our multidisciplinary team specializes in treating a variety of diagnoses, including but not limited to:

  • Multiple trauma
  • Strokes
  • Neurological injuries (brain or spinal cord)
  • Orthopedic injuries or surgeries (fractures, amputations and total joint replacement)
  • Post-surgical care
  • Cancer
  • Cardiopulmonary disease (heart and lung)
  • General debilitation
  • Wound care of all types

Patients are seen in their rooms, and therapists work together to facilitate the patient's return to their lifestyle prior to injury or illness. When a patient is not able to recover fully, they teach adapted techniques that will allow the patient to be as independent and functional as possible. Those patients who need additional therapy or assistance are referred to other facilities such as skilled nursing facilities, comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation, long-term care facilities, home health or outpatient therapies.

Research studies have shown that therapy intervention within the first 24-48 hours after injury or illness results in better outcomes.
